Lumenpulse Lights Boston City Hall

November 8, 2016

Lumenpulse luminaires chosen to light Boston City Hall highlight and revitalize the building’s unique “Heroic” style. An initiative from Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, the city set out to liven up the City Hall Plaza as well as create an inviting space for locals and visitors alike.

The new lighting was unveiled during a Light Bright Beer Garden event last month.

To illuminate the original tripartite design of City Hall, lighting designers Lam Partners Inc. used a mix of durable, high-output Lumenbeam Grande RGBW and Lumenfacade RGBW luminaires, washing the hall’s façade in a warm white light as a regular setting, while also having the capability to project an array of colour options for civic and celebratory events. Lumenbeam Grande Pendant fixtures also replaced the original recessed lighting to illuminate the lower levels and highlight the building’s entrances.

Lumenpulse’s Lumentalk technology was essential for the success of this project. “Within instants, Lumentalk’s advantages stood out because we had to use the existing wiring,” explained Justin T. Brown, Associate Principal at Lam Partners Inc.

“Due to the building’s concrete structure, it was unrealistic to run exposed wiring along the sides and exterior. Lumentalk allowed us to utilize the existing AC mains voltage and wiring and turn them into a digital mesh network of communication. From there, we could control and dim the fixtures to the client’s liking.”

“We are very grateful for having been chosen to illuminate Boston City Hall,” said Francois-Xavier Souvay, President and CEO of Lumenpulse. “This city has played such a key role in Lumenpulse’s development in recent years and we view this as an honour to participate in this revitalization project.”

“For the first time in its 48 year history, Boston City Hall shines,” said Mayor Martin J. Walsh. “This state of the art lighting system helps make City Hall the civic heart of our city by livening up the plaza, while making the area safer and connecting us to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. Bringing new light to City Hall is symbolic of a more responsive vision here at City Hall, one that is meant to be engaging, inspiring, and serve as a beacon of the city and our values.”

Infrastructure Lighting Fixtures: Why Scale Matters

In infrastructure projects, the size and scale of outdoor lighting fixtures are critical—not just for aesthetics, but for functionality, safety, and long-term performance. Whether lighting a streetscape, transit hub, or civic plaza, appropriately scaled fixtures help create environments that are both visually coherent and effectively illuminated. Public lighting plays a role in shaping how spaces feel after dark. Well-proportioned fixtures contribute to a unified visual experience that reinforces architectural character and community identity. Oversized poles or luminaires can overwhelm pedestrians and detract from historic or human-scale environments. Undersized fixtures, on the other hand, may get lost in the landscape or appear out of place in large open areas.

Concept Illumination: Lighting Project – Maisonneuve Terminal – Significant Improvement in Nighttime Visibility

Termont Montréal Inc., operator of the Maisonneuve Terminal at the Port of Montreal, mandated Concept Illumination to modernize the site’s outdoor lighting system. As a busy maritime hub governed by strict safety and operational standards, the terminal required a solution that ensured long-term compliance with the Canadian Labour Code while improving reliability, lowering energy consumption, and reducing light pollution. To identify the optimal approach, Concept Illumination carried out a detailed assessment of the existing infrastructure, including the masts, mounting arms, and operational flows across the terminal. This informed a design solution that replaced the fixtures while reusing the existing structures, validated through photometric analyses based on two extreme operating scenarios: a fully empty terminal and one at maximum container capacity.

Artika: 5 Advantages of Smart Lighting

Lighting is arguably one of the most important features of any home. Too bright, and it can be abrasive, increasing your sensitivity to light. Too dim, and it hides the unique characteristics of your home and can have adverse effects on your mood. When you design your home, the type of lighting and fixtures you choose are just as important as selecting a paint color or deciding on what pieces of furniture to buy. Traditionally, the lighting options available to homeowners have been rather limited. But all of that has changed. As people embrace a more digitized world and become more interconnected, smart lighting is revolutionizing the way homeowners can incorporate lighting into their homes. Smart light bulbs aren’t only longer lasting, but they can be customized and controlled by other smart home devices, such as Google Assistant or Alexa.

EB Horsman: A Practical Guide to LED Lighting for Hotels & Hospitality Spaces

Lighting plays a bigger role in the guest experience than most people realize. It sets the mood the moment someone walks through the door, affects how comfortable a room feels, and even influences how guests perceive cleanliness, safety, and quality.  Done well, lighting helps create the kind of space that feels familiar and welcoming – a true home away from home. In fact, many of the same essential lighting rules apply to hospitality spaces as to homes! For many hotel owners and operators, lighting is also one of the most overlooked opportunities for improvement, often because of outdated perceptions about LED technology. While early LED lighting earned a reputation for being overly bright or cold, today’s LED solutions – like those by Philips and Signify – are a very different story. Modern LEDs offer warm, inviting light, precise control, and significant efficiency gains, making them well suited to the unique demands of hotels and other hospitality spaces.
