The Zaneen team wanted to take a moment to tell you more about Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) by answering some common questions. They begin by defining what a LED means and describe a few of its technical details and then look into the importance of LED technology, the advantages of using LEDs, and some must-know tips for getting the most out of your lights.
In the lighting industry, the act of “binning” of LEDs is the process of sorting LEDs by certain characteristics, such as colour, voltage, and brightness. The ANSI standard C78.377-2017 provides the dimensions and coordinates of the bins that are currently used to standardize the colour points of all white light LEDs. These dimensions are calculated from the Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) and the distance from the Planckian locus (Duv). The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) first developed the now well-known 1931 XYZ colour space almost 90 years ago, associating the full gamut of visible colours with how these colours blend together mathematically in illumination applications.
Great lighting starts with the right solution! So, when Mackenzie Electric needed to illuminate a communal arbour meeting space in the Northwest Territories, Kakisa Cultural Arbour Centre, their team turned to Cooper Lighting Solutions and the Lumark LSF Selectable Flood Series. Why Cooper Lighting Solutions? The LSF offers high-performance LED floodlighting with selectable lumen outputs and colour temperatures, providing the flexibility to meet the needs of the space.
Grace in the Kitchen is a specialty food store focused on gourmet cheeses and meats, high-end kitchenware, giftware, and unique food items. When the business outgrew its original downtown Ottawa (Canada) location, owners found a new space – three times the size – in the nearby suburb of Kanata. Ottawa-based Parallel 45 Design Group Ltd. was hired to build out the design concept of the former warehouse. The overall intent was to create a neutral space that did not overshadow the merchandise itself.
Located 15 minutes from Montreal, Toyota’s Quebec Regional Office in Brossard, Canada houses a first-floor training and service area, and second-floor offices where financial services and dealer network operations are conducted. With environmental sustainability representing a core pillar of Toyota’s mission, the Brossard location has long been committed to embracing products and practices that conserve energy and reduce waste, both internally as well as within their supply chain. So, when inconsistent and outdated lighting throughout their building was found to be driving excessive energy and maintenance costs and no longer met Toyota’s brand standards or sustainability goals, the management team in Brossard embarked on a lighting upgrade in 2025. And thanks to their selection of a full suite of high-performing lighting and control solutions from leading LED manufacturer LEDVANCE, Toyota’s Brossard facility will now enjoy the benefits of more efficient and low-maintenance illumination for years to come.
When planning an LED lighting project, the focus is usually on performance, specifications, budget, and application requirements. But there is another factor that can have just as much impact on the project: product availability. A fixture may be the right choice on paper, but if it is not available when needed, it can affect installation schedules, material coordination, and even the products ultimately used on the project. For contractors, distributors, designers, and project managers, confirming availability early can help make the entire process more predictable.
For the better part of a decade, energy-efficient lighting and switch to LED meant the same thing. Rip out the fluorescents, drop in LED, book the savings. That job is now largely finished. With the manufacture and import of most fluorescent lamps prohibited in Canada as of 2026, the lamp itself has stopped being the decision. LED is simply what gets installed. Which raises a question every contractor quoting commercial work should be ready to answer: once the fixtures are all LED, where do the next savings come from? The answer is the controls layer. And in Canada, it is no longer a value-add you upsell. Under the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, much of it is mandatory.
Lighting has always been essential to how we see and use a space. But today, its role is moving beyond visibility and aesthetics. As workplaces, healthcare facilities, hospitality environments, educational institutions and residential spaces become more focused on people, lighting is being designed to support comfort, productivity and overall well-being. This shift has brought human-centric lighting into sharper focus. Instead of treating lighting as a purely functional element, human-centric lighting considers how light can interact with the needs, behaviours and daily rhythms of people. For lighting manufacturers, designers, architects and solution providers, this creates an opportunity to develop products and systems that deliver more value than illumination alone.
The Q3 2026 Pulse of Lighting presents a Canadian lighting market that continues to generate business, but not with the consistency or momentum that would characterize a broad-based recovery. Project opportunities remain available, current business is moving through the channel, and pricing is providing some revenue support. At the same time, through-stock activity remains restrained, backlog conditions vary considerably, and the forward project pipeline is creating caution among manufacturers.
LEDVANCE Canada is marking the 10th anniversary of LEDVANCE as an independent brand by celebrating a decade of growth, customer partnerships, and continued investment in solutions designed around the real-world needs of Canadian contractors, distributors, specifiers, end users, and communities. Built on the legacy of the SYLVANIA brand, LEDVANCE’s roots trace back more than a century to the early days of electric lighting innovation. From its origins in 1901 and the formation of Hygrade Sylvania in 1931, SYLVANIA helped pioneer advancements from incandescent and fluorescent technologies to modern energy-efficient lighting systems. In Canada, that legacy continues through LEDVANCE Canada’s commitment to engineering excellence, local market understanding, and long-standing relationships with the customers and partners who shape the country’s lighting industry.
At Unsworth Vineyards in Mill Bay, the lighting needed to do more than simply “light the room.” It needed to support a world-class guest experience while still delivering safe, consistent illumination in the production spaces that keep the winery running day after day. Working closely with Introba, Mac’s II Agencies partnered early in the process to help shape a lighting approach that met the different performance levels of back-of-house and front-of-house atmospheres.
When it comes to home upgrades, light switches might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But they should be. Whether you’re building a smart home from the ground up or just want to add a touch of modern convenience, Leviton offers a full spectrum of residential light switches that blend form, function, and future-readiness. From classic toggles to motion-sensing automation and app-controlled smart switches, Leviton has a solution for every room, every lifestyle, and every budget.
The restored Wellington Building was the first to be lit following the implemented Master Plan for the Parliamentary Precinct in Canada’s capital, Ottawa. Returned to its 1920s splendour, the onetime insurance building now house MP offices, a library, and governmental meeting rooms. Public Services and Procurement Canada turned to lighting design firm Lightemotion to highlight this stunning example of Beaux-Arts architecture and sets it aglow with subtle elegance.
When it comes to lighting projects, time on site matters. Tight schedules, labour costs, and project deadlines all depend on how efficiently an installation is completed. While fixture performance is critical, features that simplify installation can have just as much impact on overall project success. Here are six key features that help streamline installs, reduce complications, and keep projects moving.
At Pickering College, the new West Lake House creates a dynamic environment for teaching, learning, and connection. Designed to double the school’s classroom space nearly, the new academic hub brings together flexible spaces that can adapt to different activities and ways of learning.
Lighting bridges means meeting some tricky and unusual requirements, but Lumenpulse can provide their expertise. Lighting maintenance is rarely more difficult than on a bridge. And the stakes are high – safety may be at risk if lights fail, not to mention the appearance of a prominent piece of infrastructure. Lumenpulse prides itself on its robust, long-lasting fixtures for bridges. On a recent tender for lighting of bridges, Lumenpulse was proud to be the only supplier to meet the city of Paris’ strict requirements for durability.
