Maisonneuve Terminal Lighting Project by Concept Illumination: Lighting Performance Meets Operational Demands While Maintaining Safety

Termont Montréal Inc., operator of the Maisonneuve Terminal at the Port of Montreal, mandated Concept Illumination to modernize the site’s outdoor lighting system. As a busy maritime hub governed by strict safety and operational standards, the terminal required a solution that ensured long-term compliance with the Canadian Labour Code while improving reliability, lowering energy consumption, and reducing light pollution.

To identify the optimal approach, Concept Illumination carried out a detailed assessment of the existing infrastructure, including the masts, mounting arms, and operational flows across the terminal. This informed a design solution that replaced the fixtures while reusing the existing structures, validated through photometric analyses based on two extreme operating scenarios: a fully empty terminal and one at maximum container capacity.

The final design was developed to optimize safety, visibility, and functionality. The new fixtures were oriented parallel to the ground to reduce glare and focus lighting on work areas. The fixture configuration on each mast was standardized, and the number of fixture variations was kept to a minimum to maintain a uniform appearance and simplify future maintenance. This approach reduced the total number of fixtures from 240 to 104 while improving lighting uniformity.

The installation took place within a complex logistical setting, where truck, rail, and maritime traffic intersect. Each 100-foot mast was lowered and raised using a hydraulic system, except for two masts that could only be accessed by crane. All work was carefully planned to minimize disruptions to terminal operations. The project was completed over four weeks, progressing at a pace of one mast per day, while maintaining a high level of safety.

It was a real pleasure to work with the Concept Illumination team on this project to modernize our lighting equipment. Their professionalism, technical knowledge of each of the products offered, and the efficiency of the installation team made this project a real success.

Benoit-G. Hubert, Port Infrastructure Project Manager at Termont Montréal Inc.

The project delivered tangible results: a significant improvement in nighttime visibility, more than an 80% reduction in energy consumption, reduced long-term maintenance requirements, and a $50,000 rebate from Hydro-Québec. The improved visibility across the site also enhances safety for both personnel and all terminal users.

This project showcases Concept Illumination’s expertise in delivering large-scale projects in critical industrial settings, ensuring lighting performance meets operational demands while maintaining safety and uninterrupted operations.
