Located 15 minutes from Montreal, Toyota’s Quebec Regional Office in Brossard, Canada houses a first-floor training and service area, and second-floor offices where financial services and dealer network operations are conducted. With environmental sustainability representing a core pillar of Toyota’s mission, the Brossard location has long been committed to embracing products and practices that conserve energy and reduce waste, both internally as well as within their supply chain. So, when inconsistent and outdated lighting throughout their building was found to be driving excessive energy and maintenance costs and no longer met Toyota’s brand standards or sustainability goals, the management team in Brossard embarked on a lighting upgrade in 2025. And thanks to their selection of a full suite of high-performing lighting and control solutions from leading LED manufacturer LEDVANCE, Toyota’s Brossard facility will now enjoy the benefits of more efficient and low-maintenance illumination for years to come.
For the better part of a decade, energy-efficient lighting and switch to LED meant the same thing. Rip out the fluorescents, drop in LED, book the savings. That job is now largely finished. With the manufacture and import of most fluorescent lamps prohibited in Canada as of 2026, the lamp itself has stopped being the decision. LED is simply what gets installed. Which raises a question every contractor quoting commercial work should be ready to answer: once the fixtures are all LED, where do the next savings come from? The answer is the controls layer. And in Canada, it is no longer a value-add you upsell. Under the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings, much of it is mandatory.

LEDVANCE Canada is marking the 10th anniversary of LEDVANCE as an independent brand by celebrating a decade of growth, customer partnerships, and continued investment in solutions designed around the real-world needs of Canadian contractors, distributors, specifiers, end users, and communities. Built on the legacy of the SYLVANIA brand, LEDVANCE’s roots trace back more than a century to the early days of electric lighting innovation. From its origins in 1901 and the formation of Hygrade Sylvania in 1931, SYLVANIA helped pioneer advancements from incandescent and fluorescent technologies to modern energy-efficient lighting systems. In Canada, that legacy continues through LEDVANCE Canada’s commitment to engineering excellence, local market understanding, and long-standing relationships with the customers and partners who shape the country’s lighting industry.

The rapid evolution of LED technology has brought with it numerous benefits—higher efficiency, longer lifespans, and cost savings for businesses. However, it has also led to a phenomenon rarely discussed in detail: industry fragmentation. Particularly in the Commercial & Industrial (C&I) lighting sector, the LED market today is characterized by an overwhelming variety of products, suppliers, and standards. This fragmentation poses challenges for manufacturers, distributors, and end-users alike. But what has driven this fragmentation, and why is it such a pressing issue?
Ethernet is a high performance and reliable networking technology that has been making inroads into architectural LED lighting applications. Having undergone decades of research and development as a workhorse of the IT industry, Ethernet brings a refined pedigree to a lighting industry which is trending toward highly intelligent light fixtures and services. This article highlights how Ethernet can simplify some of the ways professionals think about lighting infrastructure, how its expansive scalability can allow lighting designers to express the full breadth of their imaginations, and how its familiar components can make installation and network upkeep straightforward and manageable.

For years, sensors in commercial buildings have been treated as simple, interchangeable components—selected late and driven by cost. That approach made sense when their role was limited. It no longer does. Today’s sensors, especially Smart Ceiling Mount Sensors (CMS), play a much larger role in lighting control systems and building automation systems. They influence lighting, energy use, system integration, and overall building performance. What was once a basic control point is now a foundational layer in how building systems function together.
