Richmond Cultural Centre Annex Lighting Project Enhances the Space’s Purpose, While Providing Optimal Illumination for Every Activity

The Richmond Cultural Centre Annex in Richmond, BC, showcases how thoughtful lighting design can transform a space, proving that lighting is more than just illumination—it’s an opportunity to think outside the box. By combining character, creativity, and functionality, the fixtures and designs in this project enhance the space’s purpose while providing optimal illumination for every activity.

Working closely with all project stakeholders, innovative lighting solutions were introduced throughout this 15,154-square-foot tenant improvement project. These fixtures serve as both practical additions and integral elements of the design team’s vision, enhancing the Annex’s artistic purpose and highlighting its architectural features.

The corridor ceiling immediately draws attention with its striking geometric triangular pattern. Over 40 Sculpt Forms Recessed fixtures, designed in a 90-degree triangular form, are strategically scattered into the t-bar system. These triangles are illuminated with a 3500K colour temperature, creating playful yet comfortable lighting. The design playfully mimics the building’s triangular floor plan, adding a cohesive element to the wayfinding strategy, where even the room signs echo the triangle motif.

In the open areas and dance studios, the Sculpt SoftZone Pendant Mount fixtures create an inviting blend of functionality and artistic expression. These 4-foot-long linear pendants with 12-inch-high acoustic panels are suspended in three colour—Slate, Cotton, and Concrete. Thoughtfully composed within the existing mass timber structural bays, the pendants enhance sound quality, reduce reverberation, and draw attention to the character-defining timber elements of the building. The fixtures’ placement complements the rhythm of the structure, adding an artistic depth that seamlessly ties into the Annex’s creative atmosphere.

The Annex now serves as a vibrant extension of the Richmond Cultural Centre’s offerings, providing thoughtfully designed spaces that inspire creativity and community engagement.
