Gate Gourmet: A Lighting System Transformation

May 17, 2018

Gate Gourmet is a leading independent provider of airline catering and provisioning services. If your needs are land-based, Gate Gourmet provides catering and provisioning solutions for airport lounges, convenience stores and related establishments.

The management of Gate Gourmet, situated in Dorval, Quebec, wanted to transform the facility’s entire lighting system in order to save money on maintenance costs and reduce energy consumption. The company’s administrators solicited the help of Standard, which proposed a solution tailor-made to suit their needs.

Every area of the Gate Gourmet facilities was affected by these improvements.

Offices

In the office area, traditional PAR halogen lamps that consume 90 watts were replaced with LED-integrated luminaires: 6-inch low profile LED downlights (LPDL) that consume no more than 12 watts.

As for the down lights equipped with fluorescent tubes (17, 32 and 34 watts), Standard recommended that they be replaced with LED tubes with an output of 9 and 18 watts.

Warehouse

Regulations governing lighting and safety on these premises require that protected lighting be installed in food processing facilities to prevent broken glass particles from coming into contact with staff or food products. In this case, the ideal solution for the facility was none other than the Safety Max coated fixture. Fluorescent tubes (F32T8) were replaced with LED Safety Max lamps that consume as little as 18 watts.

In the freezer and refrigerator spaces, existing 150-watt HID luminaires were replaced with LED vapour-tight luminaires (series SLV) that use no more than 40 watts.

These lighting improvements effectively raised the level of light in the facility. “Some corners were so dark that we were not even aware that we did not clean them properly. Now, we can do a good job everywhere,” explained one of the employees.

Outside

The outside of the building was also refurbished to ensure proper lighting of the parking areas as well as the food loading docks. LED wall packs that use only 30 watts replaced the existing traditional metal halide fixtures with consumption varying between 100 and 400 watts.
