The Study Public House at SFU: Dynamic Lighting Upgrade Invites Students, Staff & Locals to Settle In, Stay Awhile & Come Back Again

In the heart of Simon Fraser University’s Student Union Building, The Study Public House brings a new kind of energy to campus life in Burnaby, BC. Completed around 2019, this vibrant “barcade” concept was designed to shift with the day, moving effortlessly from casual hangouts and intimate dining to lively nightlife. Warm, welcoming, and full of colour, the 5,800 sq. ft. renovation invites students, staff, and locals to settle in, stay awhile, and come back again.

Lighting plays a big role in how The Study feels from one moment to the next. In the upper pub, clean lines and bright finishes help keep the room light and open, pairing beautifully with the views and the warmth of the wood-and-shelving details. On the lower level, the mood turns more immersive, with deeper tones and a glow that makes the gaming lounge feel relaxed, playful, and a little cinematic.

Suspended above booth seating, Artemide Nur Suspension pendants in a glossy white finish bring a classic dome silhouette that anchors the brighter areas of the room. Overhead, BL Lighting Spotglobe INC string lights weave through the exposed black metal ceiling, adding a familiar incandescent warmth that feels instantly inviting, whether you are dining, entertaining, or simply unwinding. For an added layer of visual character, Axis Lighting Stencil Forms introduce geometric triangle-shaped direct lighting in a white finish, suspended to create structure and rhythm overhead.

And then there is the colour: clusters of Bock Lighting Standard Dome pendants in bold RAL finishes echo the playful personality of the venue. Hung at varying heights, the fixtures add movement and make the lighting feel curated rather than purely functional. Supporting fixtures from Liteline and ConTech Lighting round out the general illumination, helping the space stay comfortable and usable throughout the day to night.
