LightForm: UNBORING PROJECTS – The Edge at The Rise Resort – Lighting a Destination Above Okanagan Lake

The Edge – Creating Connection Between Intimacy & Surrounding Nature
Perched high above Okanagan Lake in Vernon, BC, The Edge Restaurant at The Rise Resort was envisioned to be a destination. Set against one of Canada’s most breathtaking landscapes, the goal for The Edge was to create an immersive hospitality experience and set a new standard for gatherings in the Okanagan.
To bring that vision to life, The Rise Resort partnered with Falkbuilt HQ to execute refined interiors and exteriors with precision. Surrounded by sweeping lake and valley views, honouring the natural beauty of the region with refined design was high priority for everyone involved. Falkbuilt’s scope included dramatic timber applications, solid and glass walls, operable partitions, paneled ceiling treatments, bespoke guest washrooms, and striking custom millwork. The result is a mountaintop destination that equally balances the architecture and panoramic views.
And for the lighting? That’s where LightForm comes in.
Lighting as Architecture
From the outset, what made the project truly shine was its approach. Lighting was treated not as a finishing touch, but as an architectural layer.
“From the beginning, lighting was part of the architectural concept, not an add-on,” says Falkbuilt HQ Designer, Soodabeh Naderi.
The team’s efficiency and clarity of vision ensured the design intent remained intact as well as on schedule and on budget. But architecture alone does not define atmosphere.
With 30-foot windows and a soaring timber structure, the challenge was clear: Lighting needed to feel integrated and subtle. It needed to shape the atmosphere while allowing the landscape to remain the star.
“The space has a tall ceiling and strong timber structure, so the goal was to use light to soften the scale and highlight the architecture,” explains Soodabeh.
Designing withing a vaulted ceiling presented technical complexity as well. Perry Pugh, Account Executive at LightForm Vancouver who worked on The Edge project lists a number of obstacles they had to face: “There were definitely some challenges in designing the chandelier canopies to match the slope of the vaulted ceilings… We also had two areas where we had to integrate lighting into the incredible mass timber internal architecture.”
The natural surroundings of Vernon and Okanagan Lake also played an equally important role in shaping the lighting scheme. “The restaurant sits between the greens of the landscape and the blues of the lake and sky,” Soodabeh notes. “So we used warm interior lighting to balance the cool exterior light.”
“The idea was to create intimacy while keeping a strong connection to the surrounding nature.”

Every transition within The Edge was intentional.
“The mood was designed as a gradual shift,” Soodabeh explains. “The dining area feels calm and open, the lounge introduces rhythm through linear lighting, and the private dining room becomes more intimate and focused.”
“Across all areas, the lighting remains warm, layered, and restrained.”
A “Starry Night” Above the Lake
The dining room concept was inspired by the client’s vision of a “starry night.” That inspiration led to the selection of the Dark and Bright Star Pendant by Bomma.
“When I discovered Bomma’s Dark and Bright Star Pendants, their form and craftsmanship felt like a natural fit,” says Soodabeh.
“Because of the high ceilings, the pendants could float within the space. During the day they feel subtle, and at night they emerge like a constellation, transforming the atmosphere from open and panoramic to intimate and atmospheric.”
Suspended high within the vaulted ceiling above the dining area, the Dark & Bright Star pendants float lightly during the light of day, subtle against the panoramic backdrop of the vast Okanagan backdrop. In the evening, they emerge like a constellation, transforming the space from expansive and panoramic to intimate and atmospheric.
As Soodabeh has made clear, lighting was strategically placed to articulate spatial transitions and focal points. Additional Bomma fixtures shape key moments within the space:
- Dark and Bright Star Pendants define the dining room.
- Orbital Pendants anchor the fireplace and staircase, creating a natural social centre.
- Soap Pendants introduce softness and intimacy in the private dining room
Rather than demanding attention, each piece enhances the architecture, guiding guests gently through the space.
The fireplace lounge, framed by Orbital Pendants, is a visual and social focal point. Because of the vaulted ceilings, it took some extra maneuvering to achieve the vision. Perry recalls, “In the grand staircase, we had to map out the Orbital Pendants to be hung through the wood ceiling structure.”
Rather than commanding attention through spectacle, it draws guests in subtly becoming a natural conversation starter. It was worth all the effort.
A fully dimmable lighting system also allows the restaurant to shift seamlessly throughout the day, adapting to lunch service, evening dining, and private events.
Soodabeh cites how important it was to consider the shifts in time and types of service or events, and how the fixtures don’t simply illuminate the space; they influence the experience for those within it.
Lighting plays a key role in how guests experience The Edge, guiding them from open, panoramic areas to more intimate moments. One of the most memorable transitions happens at dusk, when the pendants begin to glow against the darkening landscape. The space quietly shifts from expansive to intimate, which defines the character of the restaurant.

A New Standard for Hospitality
The Edge at The Rise Resort is a compelling example of what is possible when architecture, interior design, construction, and lighting design move in harmony.
Falkbuilt’s construction methodology delivered efficiency and precision. Bomma’s handcrafted luminaires introduced rhythm, warmth, and sculptural presence. Combined, they created a destination where guests aren’t just dining at a restaurant; they experience a space that evolves with light, views, time of day, and what The Edge has to offer.
It is a sanctuary of sophistication on a mountaintop, perched above the lake, and defined by the glow and warmth within.
