Canberra, AU Christmas Tree Achieves World Lighting Record

Canberra

Dec 8 2015

Canberra’s “Christmas Lights Man,” David Richards, has orchestrated the world’s largest display of Christmas lights on an artificial tree with 518,838 individual LEDs. The tree is decorated with baubles, flashing presents and a 1.5-metre star containing 12,000 bulbs.

The undertaking involved architects, electrical and civil engineers, designers, and an army of volunteers from SIDS and Kids ACT, a charity dedicated to eliminating sudden and unexpected death in children, and providing related programs and services. Richards and his wife Jean lost a son at one month due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. They have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars through various fundraisers to conjure up local support for the charity and much needed funds.

Richards has previously set Guinness World Records titles for the “Largest image made of LED lights” and “Most Christmas lights on a residential property.”
