Richmond, BC Pilot Project Tests 5 Models of Efficient Streetlights

Efficient Streetlights

They’ve become the best option for indoor lighting. Now, efficient LEDs are also starting to show up over roadways and parking lots around the province.”LED streetlight technology has definitely arrived. There are a variety of models to choose from, and the cost has been coming down fairly rapidly,” says Rick Truong, key account manager for BC Hydro.

Most municipalities have a mix of streetlights. Some are owned and maintained by the municipality itself, and others are owned and maintained by BC Hydro, with the municipality still paying for the energy usage. There are about 91,000 BC Hydro-owned streetlights in B.C.

The one-year pilot project will test five different models of LED streetlamps on BC Hydro-owned poles in the City of Richmond, and will assess
• light quality
• ease of installation and maintenance
• durability
• how well the lights perform in the wet Lower Mainland climate…
