EB Horsman & Son: Lighting 101 – How to Choose the Right LED Replacement

Not All LED Replacements Are Created Equal

Whether you’re replacing a single light fixture in your home or upgrading lighting throughout your building, choosing an equivalent LED replacement isn’t always as simple as matching the wattage or colour temperature.

Many homeowners, contractors, facility managers, and property managers discover this after installing new LED fixtures only to find that the light looks different, the room feels brighter or darker than expected, or the new fixture doesn’t perform like the one it replaced.

The good news is that most of these issues can be avoided by understanding a few key specifications before you buy.

Here’s what to consider when choosing an equivalent LED replacement.

1. Matching the Colour Temperature Doesn’t Guarantee a Match

One of the most common misconceptions is that two fixtures labelled 4000K or 5000K will produce the same light.

In reality, two fixtures with the same colour temperature can still look noticeably different once installed. One may appear cleaner and brighter, while another may have a slightly green, blue, or yellow appearance.

That’s because colour temperature only describes whether the light appears warm or cool. It doesn’t measure how consistently colours are rendered or how the light is produced.

If you’re replacing only a few fixtures in an existing space, these differences can become very noticeable.

2. Don’t Match Wattage, Match Light Output

With LED technology, wattage measures energy consumption, not brightness.

Instead of comparing watts, compare:

  • Lumens (Light Output)
  • Beam Distribution
  • Mounting Height
  • Application

For example, two 40-watt LED fixtures may produce very different amounts of usable light depending on their design.

Matching lumen output helps maintain consistent lighting throughout your home or facility.

3. Replacing One Fixture May Not Always Match

If one fixture fails, it’s tempting to replace only that unit.

While this is often possible, don’t expect every replacement to blend perfectly with older fixtures.

LED technology continues to evolve, and manufacturers use different LED chips, optics, and drivers. Even when the specifications appear identical, the light output and appearance can vary.

This is most noticeable in:

  • Kitchens
  • Garages
  • Basements
  • Hallways
  • Offices
  • Warehouses
  • Retail Spaces
  • Schools

If maintaining a consistent appearance is important, consider replacing fixtures by room or section instead of one at a time.

4. Verify Dimming & Lighting Controls

Many LED performance issues are caused by incompatible lighting controls rather than the fixture itself.

Common symptoms include:

  • Flickering
  • Buzzing
  • Lights turning off unexpectedly
  • Limited dimming range
  • Uneven brightness

Before replacing fixtures, verify compatibility with your existing:

  • LED drivers
  • Dimmers
  • Occupancy sensors
  • Building automation systems

Checking compatibility before installation can prevent unnecessary troubleshooting later.

5. Consider Where the Fixture Will Be Installed

Not every LED fixture is built for every application. Before selecting a replacement, consider where it will be installed.

For residential applications:

  • Bathrooms
  • Garages
  • Outdoor entrances
  • Covered patios
  • Enclosed ceiling fixtures

For commercial applications:

  • Warehouses
  • Manufacturing Facilities
  • Parkades
  • Schools
  • Healthcare Facilities
  • Wastewater and Industrial Environments

Selecting a fixture that’s designed for the environment helps maximize performance and extend its service life.

6. Think Beyond Today’s Repair

A replacement fixture should solve more than today’s maintenance issue.

Consider:

  • Product Availability
  • Driver Replacement Options
  • Future Maintenance
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Rebates, Where Available
  • Manufacturer Support

Choosing quality products from established manufacturers can reduce maintenance costs and make future replacements easier.

7. Ask These Questions Before Ordering

Whether you’re replacing lighting in your home or managing a property, ask these questions before purchasing:

  • Will it match the existing fixtures?
  • Is the brightness (lumens) comparable?
  • Is the colour temperature right for the space?
  • Is it compatible with existing dimmers or controls?
  • Is it suitable for the installation environment?

A little planning before purchasing can save time, money, and frustration later.

Common Replacement Mistakes to Avoid

Many lighting issues can be traced back to a few common mistakes:

  • Selecting fixtures based only on wattage
  • Assuming all 4000K fixtures look the same
  • Overlooking dimming compatibility
  • Installing fixtures not designed for the environment
  • Choosing the lowest-cost option without considering long-term maintenance
