Biigtigong Nishnaabeg Arbour Lighting Project: Designed to Honour Tradition While Creating a Welcoming Space for Future Generations
Some projects are about more than providing light—they’re about enhancing spaces that bring people together.
Located at the mouth of the Biigtig Zibi (Pic River) along the shores of Chi-Gaam (Lake Superior) near Marathon, Ontario, the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg Arbour is envisioned as a lasting community gathering place. Designed to honour tradition while creating a welcoming space for future generations, the Arbour serves as the heart of cultural celebrations, intergenerational dancing, and community events. The project was completed through a collaboration between Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, the Pic River Development Corporation, local builders, and Serino Architects, whose culturally sensitive design reflects the community’s connection to the land.
Building a Space for Future Generations
The development of the Arbour represents more than the construction of a new structure—it represents an investment in preserving culture, strengthening community connections, and creating a place where traditions can continue to thrive.
Throughout the design and construction process, careful consideration was given to how the space would function both during the day and after sunset. Every design element needed to complement the surrounding landscape while supporting gatherings, ceremonies, and celebrations for generations to come.

Lighting That Complements the Architecture
Lighting played an important role in bringing the Arbour to life after dark. Rather than overwhelming the site with excessive illumination, the lighting strategy focused on providing comfortable visibility while preserving the character of the space. Eight FL05 Area Lights were installed throughout the site to provide broad, uniform illumination for pathways and gathering areas. Each fixture was paired with a visor, helping to direct light precisely where it’s needed while reducing unwanted glare and light spill beyond the project boundaries.
At the entrance, an FLM02 Mini Flood Light was used to create a welcoming arrival experience while complementing the overall design of the space. Together, these lighting solutions create an environment that is safe, inviting, and respectful of both the architecture and the surrounding landscape.

Supporting DarkSky Initiatives
Projects located within natural environments require thoughtful lighting design. Rather than simply increasing light output, DarkSky-approved lighting focuses on directing illumination only where it’s needed. By reducing glare, uplight, and light trespass, communities can improve nighttime visibility while protecting the surrounding environment and preserving the beauty of the night sky.
For the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg Arbour, visor accessories installed on the FL05 Area Lights help better control light distribution by reducing spill outside the intended area. Combined with careful fixture placement, the lighting system supports community safety without unnecessarily illuminating the surrounding landscape. Thoughtful lighting design not only improves visual comfort—it also helps create spaces that feel more connected to their natural surroundings.

A Space Designed to Be Experienced
The true success of any community project is measured by how it’s used. As the Arbour welcomed community members for Pow Wow celebrations, the completed space came to life exactly as intended. The lighting quietly supports the experience, providing visibility throughout gathering areas while allowing the architecture, traditions, and people to remain the focus.
The result is a space that continues to honour the community’s past while supporting future generations of cultural celebration and connection.

The Value of Thoughtful Outdoor Lighting
Projects like the Biigtigong Nishnaabeg Arbour demonstrate that outdoor lighting is about far more than illumination. When lighting is carefully planned alongside architecture and landscape design, it can improve safety, support community use, reduce environmental impact, and respect the cultural significance of the space it serves.
Whether illuminating a community gathering place, public park, commercial development, or institutional project, thoughtful lighting design helps create spaces that remain welcoming, functional, and sustainable long after the sun goes down.
