The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) has released their 2022 Illumination Award winners. The program aims to highlight the professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design, “based upon the individual merit of each entry judged against specific criteria.”

The design team at LWG Architectural Interiors had the unique opportunity to collaborate on a pilot project for Accessibility Standards Canada (ASC) in Gatineau (Quebec, Canada).
Traditionally, lighting design could be a tedious process, often involving physical mockups, time-consuming calculations, and static renderings using multiple software tools. With advancing technology, these traditional methods are giving way to more sophisticated tools that enhance precision, speed, and visualization. On the downside, many of the new tools are not particularly intuitive and the learning curve can be high. Light ARchitect is a notable exception. Light ARchitect is the multiple award-winning lighting simulation app developed by Cooper Lighting Solutions. Using real-time surveying capabilities, instant photometric calculations, and augmented reality (AR) visualization, Light ARchitect eliminates the guesswork from lighting design and fosters a more efficient and collaborative process involving all stakeholders and resulting in expedited decision-making throughout the project.
Light plays a crucial role not only in our ability to see but also in regulating our internal body clock, sleep patterns, and overall well-being. Traditional lighting design primarily focuses on visual comfort and task illumination. However, recent advancements have shed light on the concept of melanopic lighting, which specifically targets the non-visual effects of light on human health. Human eyes contain special light-sensitive cells called intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs). These cells contain a photopigment called melanopsin, which is most sensitive to blue-green light wavelengths. When stimulated by light, melanopsin triggers various non-visual responses in the body.
