August 6, 2024 Built in 1980, the building that houses Sainte-Thérèse high school, in Quebec Canada, was looking a little worse for the wear. Renovation work began with two major projects: introducing a multidisciplinary sports centre, as well as redesigning the parking lots. With the widespread use of LED light bulbs, the replacement and upgrade of different light bulbs have also made the concept of “equivalent wattage” more and more discussed. When comparing 60-watt vs 100-watt bulb, the wattage and brightness are the factors that need to be figured out first. Wattage is used to measure the energy consumption while many people mistakenly believe it as a direct measure of the brightness. In fact, higher wattage bulbs don’t always mean brighter light. The brightness of a light bulb is measured in lumens. It should be noticed that different types of light bulbs usually emit light with different lumen ratings even at the same wattage. For example, LED lights can emit the same amount of light while consuming less energy (watt) than Halogen bulbs.

The CF Chinook Centre (more commonly known as Chinook Centre) was always destined to be a major destination point for Calgary. Opened in 1965, it is conveniently located near the city center and is only 20 minutes from Calgary International Airport. Over the years, it grew to become Calgary’s largest shopping mall with more than 250 stores and restaurants. Beyond providing a sublime shopping experience, Chinook Centre offers numerous dining options, including seven full-service restaurants, and fun entertainment options, including a 16-screen movie theatre with IMAX, a nostalgic handcrafted carousel, and a bowladrome for bowling enthusiasts. It is also well known for its special features that include a towering Albertosaurus, imaginative flying machines and a time capsule located at the center of the mall’s four-story rotunda. Despite an overall bleak forecast for shopping malls in both Canada and the U.S., Chinook Centre is thriving with numerous new and expanding tenants added just since late 2022.
As turnkey lighting contractors know, the wave of LED upgrades that swept across commercial and industrial buildings over the past decade brought major improvements in energy efficiency and maintenance reduction. But many of those first-generation LED systems installed between 2015 and 2020 are now entering a phase of performance decline that creates a ripe opportunity for LED-to-LED retrofits. A decline introducing risk of impending issues for building owners/managers as the system may have low light levels, performance issues (flickering) or even failure. These opportunities often go unnoticed by building owners and facility managers. After all, they were sold on the promise of “long-life” lighting. And while it’s true that LEDs last significantly longer than legacy technologies like fluorescent or HID, many early systems are now running at 70-80% of their original light output. Add in driver degradation, evolving code requirements, and the emergence of more efficient designs, and it becomes clear: a strategic second-generation retrofit is not just justified, it’s often essential and cannot be simply ignored. So, how should contractors approach LED-to-LED conversions? Below are key guidelines to ensure you deliver value, preserve lighting quality, and position yourself as a trusted advisor.
If the Renaissance man were alive today, how would he use his body of work to design a lighting collection? This is the inspiration for Maurice Dery’s latest handcrafted luminaire series, designed and manufactured by the father-son design team of Maurice and Jordan Dery at Karice Enterprises in Surrey, BC…
