EB Horsman Lighting Insights on the 5 Lighting Design Mistakes to Avoid for Your Home

Have you ever walked into someone’s home and immediately felt a sense of warmth and richness that you can’t quite pin down? Often, this is because they’ve really nailed their lighting design. In other words, the ambient illumination is bright but not glaring. Art and architecture are subtly highlighted, while task lights brighten work zones.

The right lighting can make your home feel just like this: the perfect balance of cozy and functional. So, whether you’re a homeowner refreshing your space, or a property manager upgrading rentals for comfort and efficiency, now’s the perfect time to think about your lighting choices!

Lighting Mistake 1: Not Creating a Lighting Design Plan

A bit of upfront planning can take your lighting from basic to standout. To get started, step back and think critically about how you use each of your spaces:

  • What’s the primary purpose of this room?
  • How does natural light change throughout the day?
  • Where do shadows fall, and how might lighting improve functionality?

This will help you decide where to put overhead lights, lamps, and accent lighting – and what type of switch system fits your lifestyle.

TIP: Not sure where to place your lights, what type, or how many? Let EB Horman help with a comprehensive lighting audit! Their in-house Canadian lighting experts can suggest products, assist with installation, and provide end-to-end lighting support.

Lighting Mistake 2: Using a Single Overhead Light Source in Each Room

A single ceiling fixture can make a room feel flat, shadowy, or harsh. Instead, every room should have at least two to three layered sources of light. Layering creates depth, warmth, and flexibility, allowing you to shift from bright and functional to soft and relaxing with ease.

Start with three basic layers:

  • Ambient Lighting: This is your main light source – think ceiling fixtures, recessed downlights, and track lighting.
  • Task Lighting: Focused light for specific activities like reading, cooking, or working. Add under-cabinet lights in the kitchen, sconces beside mirrors, or a table lamp near your favorite chair.
  • Accent Lighting: Decorative or mood lighting that adds dimension – like linear wall sconces, toe-kick lights, or LED strip lighting along shelves and stairs for safety and added style.

How you layer will depend on your lighting plan and how you use your spaces. For example, if you use your kitchen for both cooking and entertaining, you’ll want to combine task lighting with dimmable ambient lights. If the living room doubles as a work space, complement overhead fixtures with table lamps and reading lights, and add a smart dimmer for flexibility.

Once you’ve mapped out your zones and layers, you can think about how you’ll control them.

TIP: For smarter control, consider upgrading to a Lutron Caséta or Leviton Decora Smart system. Both let you adjust your lighting from your phone and create energy-saving programs for different uses.

Lighting Mistake 3: Buying the Wrong Bulb

The quality of your light matters as much as the brightness, and not all light bulbs are created equal. The right choice can change the entire mood of a space – not to mention your energy bill! EB Horsman recommends LED bulbs to homeowners wherever possible. They’re longer-lasting and much more energy-efficient than their incandescent counterparts, with smart, connected, and dimmable options.

It’s important to check the colour temperature when you’re buying LED bulbs, however. Preference is subjective, but generally:

  • Warm Light (2,700K–3,000K): Best for living areas, bedrooms, and dining rooms, creating a soft, welcoming glow.
  • Cool Light (3,500K–4,100K): Great for task areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or offices where clarity matters.
  • Daylight (5,000K+): Mimics natural light – perfect for garages, studios, or workspaces.

TIP: Combine function and style with Philips LED bulbs, available in a range of colour temperatures and dimmable options.

Lighting Mistake 4: Too Much Light

Too much light can be as problematic as too little. These are some factors that can make your space feel too bright or sterile:

  • Too Many Bare Bulb Fixtures: A few decorative filament-style bulbs can add style, but in general it’s wise to go for frosted and shaded fixtures, which limit glare. If you’re adding bare-bulb lighting in one of your lighting design “layers,” consider avoiding it in the others.
  • Lack of Dimmers: The ability to dial down brightness makes your lighting adaptable to different times of day and uses. You might enjoy the full 1,600 lumens of a 12-watt LED bulb at midday, for instance – but at night when you’re trying to wind down? Not so much! So, you’ll want dimming capability on your switches or bulbs to tone it down.
  • Cool-Toned Light at Night: As great as daylight bulbs are for workspaces (see above), blue-white light can feel brighter than normal at night, disrupting sleep and relaxation. Stick to warm lighting inside your living space – or choose colour-tuneable bulbs that you can program to warm up as the ambient light dims.

TIP:  Install a smart dimmer to automatically adjust brightness and ambiance throughout the day.

Lighting Mistake 5: Leaving It Too Dark Outside

A well-lit home doesn’t stop at the door. Outdoor lighting improves safety and adds style, while making your property feel cohesive. As the days get shorter, outdoor lights can guide guests to your door, highlight architectural features, and create a warm, welcoming glow.

Similar to indoor lighting, you’ll want to layer several types here – consider path lights, stair or railing strips, and motion-sensor security lights to start.

TIP: EB Horsman loves GM Lighting outdoor fixtures for durable, weather-rated performance in all conditions. They have a lot of curb appeal, too!
