Tom Penton & Magic Lite: Celebrating 40 Years of Steady Growth, Innovation & Resilience in Canadian Lighting

By: John Kerr

Sales has always been at the core of Magic Lite’s story, because it was at the core of who its founder Tom Penton was. He genuinely loved sales, loved being independent, and consistently gravitated to roles where he could take personal responsibility for results and build his own customer base. From the very beginning, he honored the experiences in his past that shaped him, carrying forward lessons about work ethic, resilience and accountability into every stage of the business.

Tom loved promotion and selling, always out there looking, listening, and selling – whether in front of a counter, visiting agents and distributors, or on the road opening new doors. From day one he showed a deep understanding of, and strong commitment to, electrical wholesalers and agents, treating them as true partners in bringing solutions to market. He brought energy and drive to every interaction, was not afraid to go it alone and never walked away from an opportunity to champion a new idea. The early focus on lighting through products such as rope light and other specialty solutions that would eventually define the company’s direction.

Magic Lite’s 40th anniversary marks four decades of steady growth, innovation, and resilience in Canadian lighting. From Tom Penton’s single entrepreneurial idea in 1985 to a North American group of companies that now includes National Specialty Lighting (NSL) in the United States, the story is a testament to long-term vision in a highly competitive lighting market. Magic Lite was founded in 1985 after Tom discovered a niche product known as “Non-Neon” and saw an opportunity to bring innovative specialty lighting solutions to the Canadian market. Early on, the company differentiated itself by focusing on architectural and specialty lighting, introducing technologies such as fiber optics and other non-commodity offerings that helped specifiers and distributors solve unique application challenges.

From its long-standing base in Burlington, Ontario, Magic Lite built a reputation for service and reliability, combining strong technical products with responsive support for electrical distributors, contractors, and lighting designers across Canada. For more than four decades, this positioning as a specialist rather than a generalist supplier allowed the company to thrive even as larger multinational manufacturers expanded their presence in the market. As lighting technology shifted from traditional sources to LEDs, Magic Lite consistently refreshed its portfolio, adding task, linear, undercabinet, landscape, decorative and general area lighting solutions tailored to Canadian needs.

The company’s model emphasized daily shipping from a fully stocked Burlington warehouse and a network of stocking distributors, helping customers manage tight project schedules during a period of rapid product and code change. This ability to adapt quickly to LED innovations while maintaining quality and service underpinned Magic Lite’s long-term customer relationships and “trusted partner” positioning. Even as global brands consolidated and price competition intensified, Magic Lite leaned into its strengths as a focused, agile manufacturer and supplier that could respond to niche requirements and project-specific challenges.

Throughout this evolution, Tom remained at the center of the business as founder and president, guiding both strategic direction and culture. His entrepreneurial background, love of selling and early willingness to champion emerging technologies set the tone for a company that values innovation, technical acumen and long-term partnerships with distributors, agents, and specifiers.

Under his leadership, Magic Lite developed a strong internal team and, over time, welcomed the next generation of family leadership, with his daughter Jennifer (Jen) Penton taking on senior sales and business development responsibilities within the organization. Her recent promotion to COO underscores both her proven ability to drive growth and the strength of Magic Lite’s long-term plan. Working alongside her father, Jennifer represents the next generation of leadership blending a deep respect for the company’s history with a fresh perspective on innovation, technology, and customer engagement.

This continuity of leadership reinforces the company’s stability and helps ensure that its core values of customer focus, integrity and innovation carry forward into future decades.

A pivotal milestone in the company’s history was the acquisition of National Specialty Lighting (NSL), a U.S.-based architectural and specialty lighting supplier with a product offering closely aligned to Magic Lite’s focus. Since 2013, the two organizations have effectively created a binational group serving distributors and specifiers across Canada and the United States. This move extended Magic Lite’s reach, created cross-border synergies in product development and sourcing, and demonstrated confidence in the long-term prospects of the specialty lighting segment despite intense industry consolidation.

Celebrating 40 years in business underscores Magic Lite’s resilience in an industry that has undergone profound technological disruption and structural change since 1985. The company has navigated the transition from traditional sources to LED, the rise of global conglomerates and constant pricing and supply chain pressures while remaining firmly rooted as a Canadian-owned, privately held specialist.

This anniversary highlights not only the durability of the Magic Lite brand but also the enduring impact of Tom Penton’s vision – from the first “Non-Neon” offering and early rope light focus to a North American platform that includes NSL in the United States  and stands as a strong testament to the company’s ability to adapt, innovate and maintain trusted relationships in a rapidly changing, highly competitive lighting industry.
