Niagara Falls Officially Relights on December 1

Niagara Falls Officially Relights on December 1

November 8, 2016

Construction is underway on an enhanced illumination project for both the Canadian Horseshoe and American Falls, reports the Niagara Falls Illumination Board.

With financial support from government and local tourism stakeholder groups on both sides of the border, the Illumination Board is proceeding with a $4 million revitalization plan intended to improve the overall tourism experience of Niagara.

The plan will be implemented by a consortium comprising ECCO Electric Ltd., Salex Inc., Mulvey & Banani Lighting Inc., Sceneworks, and Stanley Electric.

Currently, the falls are lit using Xenon lighting technology. Almost 20 years have passed since the last major investment in lighting infrastructure, and the recent success of high profile events such as the Nik Wallenda high wire walk and Red Bull Crashed Ice have proven the tremendous potential enhanced lighting can provide to the visitor experience at the falls.

The LED upgrades include more than twice the current lighting levels, programmable lighting opportunities, and a broader, more robust colour spectrum. The newly enhanced lighting system will also eliminate dark gaps while providing greater energy efficiencies and lower maintenance costs. Nightly illumination of Niagara Falls will continue through the construction period.

An official lighting ceremony will take place on December 1.
