Outdoor Lighting and Lighting Controls: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts

Outdoor Lighting and Lighting Controls: Global Market Analysis and Forecasts

October 10, 2016

Outdoor Lighting and Lighting Controls: Global Market Analysis and ForecastsGlobal unit shipments of LED luminaires are expected to grow from an estimated 16 million in 2016 to over 28 million in 2025, estimates Navigant Research in a new report.

Outdoor lighting systems have become a focal point for businesses and governments looking to decrease operational costs and cut carbon emissions to meet environmental goals. As outdoor lighting technologies become more efficient and less expensive, more and more owners are investing in lighting upgrades.

While the use of lighting controls is also on the rise, there is less standardization around the technologies. Many different network technologies and control protocols are competing against each other.

Today, municipalities and owners are using basic controls such as dimming and automatic shut-offs during nighttime hours, but more sophisticated controls are mainly being used by early adopters. Meanwhile, LEDs have made great strides over the last few years in efficiency, quality, and decreased costs.

The huge outdoor lighting stock across the world includes different lighting technologies such as high-pressure sodium (HPS), metal halide, induction, and fluorescent. But given the advances in LED technology, LEDs are expected to mostly replace the other technologies. LED luminaire unit shipments are projected to dramatically increase in the coming years while sales of all other technologies decrease.

This Navigant Research report examines the global market for outdoor lighting and controls in roadways and highways, city parks and public areas, sports parks, commercial site lighting, outdoor parking lots, and university and college campuses. The study provides an analysis of the market issues, technological developments, and regional trends surrounding outdoor lighting systems. Global market forecasts for luminaire and lamp unit shipments and revenue, segmented by lamp type, product type, application area, and region, extend through 2025. The forecast also includes lighting controls unit shipments and revenue for motion sensors, photocells, intelligent controls, and controls software.
