LEDVANCE: UFO Lights – What You Need to Know for Efficient Illumination

LEDVANCE UFO Lights - What You Need to Know for Efficient Illumination

What Are UFO Lights?

UFO lights are LED fixtures shaped like UFOs, offering efficient lighting for large spaces. Due to their design, UFO lights cover a broader area and are ideal for places with high ceilings. The LED technology ensures that these lights consume less energy and last much longer than traditional lighting options.

High Bay UFO Lights vs. Low Bay UFO Lights

High Bay UFO Lights: These lights are designed for ceilings that are 20 to 40 feet high. They are typically used in large commercial spaces like warehouses, gymnasiums, and train stations. Low Bay UFO Lights: These are intended for ceilings ranging from 12 to 20 feet high. Low bay UFO lights are perfect for smaller spaces such as retail stores, restaurants, and offices.

Choosing the right type of UFO light is crucial for ensuring the proper brightness and light distribution. Installing a high bay light in a room with a lower ceiling (e.g., 12 feet) will result in excessive brightness, while a low bay light may not provide sufficient illumination for higher ceilings.

The key differences between high bay and low bay UFO lights are primarily related to their brightness, installation methods, beam angles, and reflectors. Low bay UFO lights typically have a lower wattage, usually under 100 watts, making them ideal for smaller spaces, while high bay UFO lights generally exceed 100 watts to provide greater brightness for larger areas. When it comes to installation, low bay UFO lights are easier to install, typically requiring just a hook or chain, whereas high bay UFO lights often need more complex mounting options such as hook mounts, ½ NPT mounts (National Pipe Thread), or ceiling mounts.

The beam angles of these two types of lights also differ. Low bay UFO lights often feature a 120-degree beam angle, which is perfect for evenly lighting smaller areas. On the other hand, high bay UFO lights come with a range of beam angles, including 60°, 90°, and 120°, allowing for more versatility in directing the light to cover larger spaces. In terms of light distribution, low bay UFO lights usually rely on reflectors or lenses to spread the light evenly across the floor. High bay UFO lights, however, do not use reflectors; instead, they feature adjustable lens angles that can precisely direct the light where it’s needed most.

UFO Lights vs. Linear LED Lights: A Comparison

While both UFO lights and linear LED lights are used for high-ceiling applications, they have distinct characteristics:

FeatureUFO LightsLinear LED Lights
Ceiling Height:
Best suited for ceilings above 35 feetIdeal for ceilings below 35 feet
Beam Angle:Round shape makes them better for open areasBest for narrow spaces, like aisles, thanks to their wide beam angle
Light Distribution:May leave gaps if too far apart, requiring careful placementProvide more uniform lighting even when spaced apart, thanks to their rectangular diode arrangement
Environmental Protection:Waterproof and dustproof, suitable for various environmental conditionsLack similar protective features
Installation Cost:Easier and less expensive to install with a single hook or chainRequire two hooks or chains and are more time-consuming to install
Replacement of Traditional Bay Lights:Best for replacing metal halide high bay lightsMore suitable for replacing fluorescent high bay lights

Conclusion

UFO lights are an excellent option for illuminating large spaces with high ceilings. With their energy-efficient LED technology, long lifespan, and ease of installation, UFO lights provide an economical solution for commercial, industrial, and retail spaces.

Whether you need high bay UFO lights for larger areas or low bay UFO lights for smaller spaces, understanding the differences and calculating your lighting needs will ensure the best results. Compared to traditional metal halide and fluorescent lights, UFO LED lights are the superior choice in terms of both cost and efficiency.
