Utility executives, energy efficiency specialists, lighting manufacturers and designers, researchers, and other industry professionals from across North America will convene in Boston this spring to exchange ideas and collaborate on ways to speed wider adoption of next-generation LED technologies.

Lighting the Path to a Decarbonized Future” is a one-day summit organized by the DesignLights Consortium (DLC). Lighting is the largest single use of electricity in commercial buildings, according to the US Energy Information Administration. By pushing wider adoption of LED lighting and related technologies, the DLC, its members (utilities and energy efficiency programs) and other stakeholders are helping support local, state, and national efforts to cut electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

“This summit is motivated by the urgent need to lower energy consumption and carbon emissions, while improving quality of light for both human wellbeing and the environment,” said DLC Executive Director and CEO Christina Halfpenny. “The DLC continues to strengthen the technical requirements for efficiency and quality of light required for inclusion on DLC Qualified Products Lists. Our 2022 Summit will be a working meeting for stakeholders to learn from each other as we enter the next phase of LED evolution.”

“Lighting the Path to a Decarbonized Future” takes place as the first generation of LED fixtures, installed about a decade ago, are reaching the end of their usefulness and need to be replaced. Since LED fixtures installed today are expected to last another decade, it is critical that new installations include state-of-the-art controls that enable maximum energy savings and building occupant comfort and wellbeing. This subject will be front and center for summit attendees, as the DLC is in the process of updating both its Solid-State Lighting (SSL) and Networked Lighting Controls (NLC) technical requirements with an eye toward supporting scalable building solutions and carbon reduction goals.

The May 24 meeting will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Aloft Boston Seaport District, with an optional welcome reception the evening of May 23. Summit discussion topics will include:

  • Driving energy and financial savings in buildings and outdoor environments while reducing environmental impact;
  • Overcoming barriers to adoption of high-performance lighting technologies, including a focus on improving interoperability between SSL and NLC products;
  • Developing technical requirements for the DLC’s Qualified Products Lists (QPL); and
  • Envisioning new methods to measure the energy savings of LED luminaires.
