Research: Lighting Boosts Workers’ Sleep by 26 Minutes

March 3, 2018

The installation of personalized, controllable lighting in an office has helped workers sleep longer by an average of 26 minutes, reports Lux Review.

A study conducted by Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands is the first to provide a qualitative measure of the importance of personalization in improving wellbeing, says Lux Review.

Office workers were first exposed to a randomly selected lighting regime for three weeks and then a new test regime in subsequent weeks. These workers received a dynamic light with varying colour temperatures and intensity. Researchers customized the light according to individuals’ ages and whether they were early risers or night owls.

Workers in a control group received standard office lighting with an average illuminance of 500 lux on their desks in a neutral white light.

On average, workers with personalized lighting reported sleeping 26 minutes longer.

To verify the findings, researchers will continue analyzing study data.
