June 1, 2017

The Illuminating Engineering Society of British Columbia (IESBC) has awarded the 2017 ‘Vision Awards, which honours outstanding BC lighting engineers and designers for their local and international projects. Submissions for the ‘Vision Awards’ open yearly in January. “IESBC received a record number of submissions this year varying from transit stations, education facilities, all the way to an industrial chipping processing facility,” says Robyn York, IESBC’s chair member and lighting specialist at Inform Contract. “The application of lighting techniques and controls submitted this year were highly innovative and it was inspiring to see new ways to illuminate a space.”

IESBC is a not-for-profit that aids in the application of international award opportunities and the ‘Vision Awards’ is stage one leading up to IES’s national ‘Illumination Awards’. This year, IESBC handed out ten ‘Awards of Merit’, two ‘Awards of Excellence’, one ‘BC Hydro ReDesign Award’, and one ‘IESBC Vision Award’. Submissions were judged based on how well the lighting design met the program criteria and it is not a competition.

This year’s ten BC recipients that received the ‘Award of Merit’ include: Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (AES Engineering); Langara College Science & Technology Building (AES Engineering); UBC Campus Energy Centre (AES Engineering); Okanagan College Kelowna Trades Complex (AES Engineering); Main Street Station (Total Lighting Solutions); West Newton Cricket Fieldhouse (AES Engineering); Vancouver Creekside Paddling Centre (MMM Group/WSP); The Jack Chow Building (World’s Famous Building Corporation & EOS Lightmedia); and the Evergreen Line (Total Lighting Solutions). The two ‘Awards of Excellence’ were presented to TELUS Garden Office Tower (Integral Group) and Evergreen Line (Total Lighting Solutions). The Main Street Station project (Total Lighting Solutions) received the 2017 BC Hydro Award and Vancouver Creekside Paddling Centre (MMM Group/WSP) received IESBC’s 2017 Vision Award.

The IES’s National ‘Illumination Awards’ will be presented on August 10 at the IES Conference in Oregon. IESBC aims to bring together the best of BC’s lighting professionals, including lighting designers, engineers, architects, interior designers, manufacturers, representatives and distributors. The organization offers monthly seminars to educate trade and residential designers or anyone interested in learning more about the lighting industry.
