Philips and the Rijksmuseum: Illuminating Dutch Masters of Light

Rijks Museum

“Night Exhibition,” a first-ever exhibit from March 25 to April 8 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, will use smart LED lighting solutions to illuminate masterpieces only after sundown (7:00 pm to 5:00 am). The exhibit will be visible to people outside passing the museum on its bicycle underpass.

Sponsored by Philips, the exhibit will also host artist Eelco van den Berg, who use a cutting edge light technique to create illuminated portraits. “Discover how light’s versatility extends beyond merely brightening the world around us – it actually creates whole new dimensions,” says publicity for the exhibit.

Philips has been a major sponsor of the Rijksmuseum since 2001. The two organizations have been working closely on developing LED lighting solutions for the museum’s art displays and buildings. Philips has designed special LED lights that provide optimum illumination for The Night Watch and other masterpieces in the galleries, bringing the colours to life as never before.

The internationally recognized Rijksmuseum offers a representative overview of Dutch art and history from the Middle Ages onwards, and of major aspects of European and Asian art.
