Lighting Design & Specification

March 26, 2018

Light + Building opened its doors in Frankfurt am Main from March 18 to 23, 2018. Over 2,700 exhibitors from 55 countries showed their latest products and innovations for the lighting, electrical engineering, home and building automation, and safety and security sectors on more than 260,000 square metres spread across 25 exhibition halls. The event attracted 220,000 trade visitors from 177 countries.

“Connected – secure – convenient” was the motto of this year’s Light + Building. The industry presented intelligent and networked solutions, future-oriented technologies and current design trends, which increase not only economic efficiency of buildings but also the comfort, safety and security of the users. The focus was on trending topics of

  • the Smartification of Everyday Life (ambitious climate targets, resource management, smart technologies and the growing demand for more security: building services technology is the key to the challenges of today and tomorrow)
  • Aesthetics and Well-being in Harmony (individual comfort and outstanding design are more closely linked than ever. It was the place to find out more about the latest design trends and the effects of light on people).

At the world’s biggest trade fair for lighting and building services technology, the industry presented intelligent and inter-connected solutions, future-oriented design trends that not only increase a building’s economic efficiency and level of convenience but also satisfy the need for safety and security.

One of the main themes in 2018 was security technology. And, with the new ‘Secure – Connected Security in Buildings’ special show, the Intersec Forum and around 150 suppliers from the building-automation and security-technology segments, Hall 9.1 was the centre for integrated building-services technology. There, the focus was on the interconnection and interfaces between the various disciplines. Additionally, the Secure! special show presented innovative solutions from the field of electrical security in a realistic setting. Moreover, leading manufacturers of security equipment and home and building-automation technology were presenting their innovations in other exhibition halls of Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Centre.

In addition to the broad spectrum of products being shown by the exhibitors, Light + Building has a multi-faceted complementary programme that, for the first time, was split into four categories — Emotion, Skills, Career and Selection — offering a theme-specific range of events for all trade visitors, from special shows, via expert lectures, to trend presentations.

This year’s Luminale – Biennale for Light Art and Urban Design – was distinguished by a new concept. Held concurrently with Light + Building, the popular event in Frankfurt und Offenbach takes advantage of the presence of lighting experts and artists from home and abroad for an interdisciplinary discourse on the city and the future.

There were no less than 149 projects in five categories: ART, SOLUTIONS, COMMUNITY, STUDY, and BETTER CITY on the program. With the Römer town hall, the Alte Oper concert hall, the European Central Bank, St. Catherine's Church (Katharinenkirche) and the ‘Eiserner Steg’ bridge, five of the most important sights in Frankfurt are venues for widely differing artistic interpretations of lighting and the urban environment.

Luminale was founded in 2002 by Messe Frankfurt. Since then, the fair and exhibition company has comprehensively promoted and supported the festival. Full details can be found at www.luminale-frankfurt.de.

The event takes place every two years. See you all there March 8-13, 2020.

The American Medical Association (AMA) Council on Science and Public Health (CSAPH) has issued two reports related to nighttime lighting since 2012. The 2012 AMA Report CSAPH 4-A-12 report, Light Pollution: Adverse Effects of Nighttime Lighting, resulted in AMA Policy H-135.932, noting in particular the “need for further multidisciplinary research of occupational and environmental exposure to light-at-night”, the recognition of how interior lighting and the use of electronic media affect sleep disruption especially in children and adolescents, and the need for work environments operating in 24/7 fashion to have employee fatigue risk management plans in place. The IES supports the 2012 AMA Policy H-135.932. Read more: IES Report. . .
